Update shouldn’t destroy any data in RP. Even if you simply install the new version over the old one, or with Joomla-s built in updater.
However a database backup is strongly advised before any update.
But beware, uninstalling the RaidPlanner component will destroy all RaidPlanner related data, so don’t uninstall it, simply install the newer version over the old one.
